λυτρ-όω ,
A.release on receipt of a ransom, hold to ransom, τινὰ χρημάτων ὅσων δοκεῖ for such a sum as is agreed on, Pl.Tht.165e; redeem a pledge, “λ. τὰ ἱμάτια” POxy.530.14 (ii A. D.), etc.:—Med., release by payment of ransom, redeem, “παρὰ τῶν Αἰτωλῶν” IG12(5).36 (Naxos, iii B. C.), cf. LXX Ex.13.15, al.; “τὴν χώραν χρημάτων οὐκ ὀλίγων” Plb.18.16.1; “ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀνομίας” Ep.Tit.2.14:—Pass., to be ransomed, “ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λελυτρῶσθαι” D.19.170, cf. Arist.EN1164b34; “αἵματι” 1 Ep.Pet.1.18.
