ἄλφι^τον , τό,
A.barley-groats, sg. in Hom. only in phrase “ἀλφίτου ἀκτήIl.11.631, Od.2.355, 14.429, and Medic., Gal.6.507: elsewh. in pl. ἄλφιτα, opp. ἀλείατα, q. v., “. μυελὸν ἀνδρῶνOd.2.290, al., Hdt.7.119, freq. in Att.; used to sprinkle over roast meat, Il.18.560, cf. Od. 14.77; esp. over sacrificial victims, Od.14.429: ἐπ᾽ ἀλφίτου πίνειν to drink wine with barley-groats in it, Epin.1:—of this was made a kind of barley-water,πιεῖν ἄλφιταHp.Epid.5.10; also, poultices, Dsc.4.87: also used as hair-powder by κανηφόροι, Hermipp.26.
