ἄπτερος , ον,
A.without wings, unwinged, Hom. only in Od., and always in phrase τῇ δ᾽ ἄπτερος ἔπλετο μῦθος the speech was to her without wings, remained unuttered, opp. ἔπεα πτερόεντα, 17.57; . φάτις unspoken rumour, A.Ag.278; ἄπτερα πωτήματα wingless flight, Id.Eu.250; δρόμος, of the Trojan horse, v.l. in Tryph.85.
2. ἄπτερα, opp. πτερωτά, without wings, of insects, Arist.HA523b17; ἄπτερον, τό, Id.PA642b33.
II. unfeathered, of Harpies, A.Eu.51; “ἄνθρωπος ζῷον .Pl.Def.415a; ὄρνις(i.e. the Chorus) E.IT1095(lyr.); of arrows, Hdt.7.92.
2. of young birds, unfledged, callow,. ὠδὶν τέκνωνE.HF1039, cf. Pl.Phdr.256d.
III. (ἀ-, = sm^-) . τάχος of great speed, Trag.Adesp.429; cf. ἄπτερα: ἰσόπτερα, ταχέα, ἡδέα, Hsch. Adv. “-ρωςLyc.627 (ὁμοπτέρως, ταχέως, Sch.).
