ἀξιόχρεως , εων, gen. εω, Ion. ἀξιόχρεος , ον, Hdt. (though the other form occurs as v.l. 1.156, al.) and Hp.Art.11; both forms in
A.Foed. Delph.Pell.1A15, cf. 1B9: Boeot. acc. pl. ἀξιοχρειέας, implying nom. ἀξιοχρη（ϝ）ής, prob. rest. in IG7.1739.9: neut. pl. “ἀξιόχρεα” Hdt. 5.65: dat. sg. written “ἀξιοχρείῳ” IG22.1183.28: Comp. and Sup. ἀξιοχρεώτερος, -ώτατος, Plb.4.3.3 (s.v.l.), 10.27.1: (χρέος):—worthy of a thing: hence,
I. abs., like ἀξιόλογος, noteworthy, considerable, “πόλις” Th.1.10; of a person, “ὑπὸ ἀξιοχρέου καὶ ἀποθανεῖν ἡμίσεα συμφορή” Hdt.5.111.
2. serviceable, sufficient, “ἀξιόχρεον πρόφασιν προτείνειν” Id.1.156; “ἐπ᾽ οὐδεμιῇ αἰτίῃ ἀξιόχρεῳ” Id.3.35; also of persons, “ἀ. ἐγγυηταί” trustworthy, substantial, Ar.Ec.1065, Pl.Ap.38c, cf.Foed. Delph.Pell. ll.cc.; “εἰς ἀ. τὸν λέγοντα ἀνοίσω” Pl.Ap.20e; “στρατόπεδα ἀ. πρὸς μάχην” Plb.1.19.1; “τόλμα ἀ. πρὸς ἡγεμονίαν” Plu.Caes.56.
II. c. inf., able, sufficient to do . ., Hdt.4.126, Th.5.13; “ἀξιόχρεω . . ἡμῖν ἀντιτάξασθαι” D.3.27; “ἢ οὐκ ἀξιόχρεως ὁ θεὸς . . τὸ μίασμα λῦσαι;” E.Or. 598. Adv. “-χρέως” Hsch.
III. c. gen. rei, worthy, deserving of, ἀξιόχρεα ἀπηγήσιος, = ἀξιαπήγητα, Hdt.5.65; ἀ. τηλικούτου πράγματος worthy of credit in . ., D.8.49, cf. 19.131.—Rare in poets, as E. l.c.
