ἀφύλ-ακτος [υ^], ον, （φυλάσσω)
A.unguarded, unwatched, “ἀφέντες τὴν ἑωυτῶν ἀφύλακτον” Hdt.8.70, cf. Th.2.13,93; ἀ. ἡ τήρησις no watching is sufficient, E.Fr.162.
II. (φυλάσσομαι) unguarded, off one's guard, ἀφυλάκτῳ τινὶ ἐπιπεσεῖν, ἐπιγενέσθαι, Hdt.9.116, Th.7.32; “πρὸς τὸ ἀδικεῖσθαι” Arist.Rh.1372a19; ἀφύλακτον εὕδειν εὐφρόνην sleep securely through the night, A.Ag.337; ἀ. τινα λαμβάνειν catch one off his guard, X.Cyr.1.6.37; “ἵνα . . ἀ. ληφθῇ” D.4.18; “τὸ ἀ.” want of precaution, Th.3.30: Comp. “-ότερος” J.AJ5.7.4: Sup.“-ότατος, νυκτὸς ὥρα” D.H.2.38.
