IG14.1389 i 35), aor. 2 “ἀγέροντο” Il.18.245, part. “ἀγρόμενος” 2.481, etc.:—gather together, “λαὸν ἀγείρων” Il.4.377, etc.; “ἐνθάδ᾽ ἀπὸ . . πολίων ἤγειρα ἕκαστον” 17.222; so in Att., “τὸν ἐς Θήβας στόλον” S.OC1306, Th.1.9; “τὸ Ἑλλάδος στράτευμα” S.El.695; “στρατιάν” X.An.3.2.13, cf. II. of things, collect, gather, “δημόθεν ἄλφιτα . . καὶ αἴθοπα οἶνον ἀγείρας” Od.19.197; “πολὺν βίοτον καὶ χρυσὸν ἀγείρων” 3.301; “πολλὰ δ᾽ ἄγειρα χρήματα” 14.285:—so in Med., “ἀγειρόμενοι κατὰ δῆμον” 13.14.
2. collect by begging, “ὡς ἂν πύρνα κατὰ μνηστῆρας ἀγείροι” 17.362, cf. Hdt.1.61; “ἀφ᾽ ὧν ἀγείρει καὶ προσαιτεῖ” D.8.26:—abs., collect money for the gods, Νύμφαις ἀ. A.Fr.168, cf. Hdt.4.35, Pl.R.381d, SIG1015.26 (Halicarnassus); esp. for Cybele, Luc.Alex.13, cf. μητραγύρτης:—abs., go aboutbegging, Philostr.VA5.7, Man.6.299, Max.Tyr.19.3, etc.
