ἀλα^ός [α^λ], όν,
A.not seeing, blind (Cypr. for τυφλός, AB1095), Od.8.195, etc. (not in Il., Trag. only in lyr.); “τὸ φωτῶν . γένοςA.Pr.549, ἀλαοί, opp. δεδορκότες, the dead, Id.Eu.322; of eyes, S.OC149, 244, E.Ph.1531; ἕλκος . blinding wound, i. e. blindness, S.Ant.974; “ἐπ̓ ὀφθαλμῶν . νέφοςA.R.2.259.
II. invisible imperceptible φθίσις ἀλαή prob. l. in Hp. Loc. Hom.10 (codd. ἄλλη, Gal. ἀλαΐα). (If from ἀ- priv., λάω A (q.v.), the accent is exceptional, but cf. Hdn. Gr. 1.112.) [α^λα^ος Od. l.c., etc.; but μάντιος ἀλαοῦ init. vers. Od.10.493, 12.267.]
