ἀλγ-ίων , ον, ἄλγιστος , η, ον, irreg. Comp. and Sup. of ἀλγεινός, formed fr. Subst. ἄλγος (cf. καλλίων, αἰσχίων): —
A.more or most painful, grievous, or distressing: — of Comp., Hom. has only neut. ἄλγιον, in signf. so much the worse, “τῷ δ᾽ ἄλγιον, αἴ κ᾽ ἐθέλῃσιν . . ἄμμι μάχεσθαιIl.18.278, cf. 306, Od.4.292: Sup. only in Il.23.655 ἥτ᾽ ἀλγίστη δαμάσασθαι (of a mule).— Both are common in Trag., as “ἀλγίωνA.Pr.934, S.Ant.64; “ἄλγιστοςId.OT 675, etc. [“-ι^ονHom., -ι_ον Trag.]
