ἀναίσθ-ητος , ον,
A.without sense or feeling, Thrasymach. 1, Pl.Ti.75e; ἀ. τινός without sense of a thing, Id.Lg.843a; “ἀ. καὶ νεκρός” Men.705; “ἀ. ψαύσιος καὶ τρώσιος” Aret.SD2.12; ἀ. ἡ ἁφή the sense of touch is lost, ib.1.7. Adv. “ἀναισθήτως, πάντων ἔχειν” Hp. Epid.3.17.ιέ; ἀ. ἔχειν to be insensible or indifferent, Isoc.12.112, cf. Th.1.82; “ἀ. διακεῖσθαι” Arist.EE1231a1.
2. without perception or common sense, wanting tact, stupid, Th.6.86; οἱ ἀ. Θηβαῖοι those blockheads . . , D.18.43, cf. Phld.Rh.1.215S.: τὸ ἀναίσθητον, = ἀναισθησία, Th.1.69. Adv. “-ως” Phld.Rh.1.227S.
II. Pass., unfelt, “θάνατος” Th.2.43.
2. not perceptible by sense, “ἀόρατον καὶ ἄλλως ἀ.” Pl.Ti.52a, cf. Phld.Piet.20, etc.; ἐν ἀ. χρόνῳ in an unappreciable time, Arist.Ph.222b15, cf. Po.1450b39.
