ἀνα-λύω (B), Ep. ἀλλύω ( ἀνλύω Hymn.Is.145): (v. λύω for the tenses and prosody: Hom. has ἀλλύουσα, ἀλλύεσκε with υ_):—
A.unloose, undo, of Penelope's web, “νύκτας δ᾽ ἀλλύεσκεν” Od.2.105; ἀλλύουσαν . . ἀγλαὸν ἱστόν ib.109, etc.; ἀνά τε πρυμνήσια λῦσαι ib. 9.178, etc.
2. unloose, set free, ἐμὲ δ᾽ ἐκ δεσμῶν ἀνέλυσαν ib. 12.200 (never in Il.), cf. Ant.Lib.22.4; “ὀφθαλμόν, φωνάν” Pi.N.10.90; “τινὰ καταδίκης” Ael.VH5.18.
3. Medic., relax, in Pass., Arist. GA728a15, Men.213, Dsc.5.3.
II. undo in various senses:
1. unloose, “ζώνην” Call.Del.237; in Med., unwind a cocoon, Arist. HA551b14.
2. Astrol., nullify, of planetary influence, Ptol. Tetr. 133 (Pass.).
3. dissolve matter into its elements, “ἐς αὐτὰ ταῦτα” Ti.Locr.102d:—Pass., of snow, melt, Plu.2.898a.
b. resolve into its elements, “οὐ καλὸν ἁρμονίην ἀναλυέμεν ἀνθρώποιο” Ps.-Phoc.102:— investigate analytically, “διάγραμμα” Arist.EN1112b20, Plu.2.792d, etc.:—Pass., Archim.Sph.Cyl.1.4; ὁ -όμενος τόπος the treasury of analysis, Papp.634.2; “ἀναλύοντες καὶ ἀναλυόμενοι” Dam.Pr.2; “ἀ. τοὺς μύθους ἐς λόγους πιθανούς” Jul.Or.2.74d.
4. in the Logic of Arist., reduce a syllogism, APr.47a4, al.; cf. “ἀνάλυσις” 1.4.
5. reduce, “σχοινία εἰς ὀργυιάς” Hero *Geom.5.8.
6. Gramm., resolve, “κτητικὰ εἰς γενικάς” A.D.Synt.292.17.
7. do away, cancel, “μόρσιμ᾽ ἀ. Ζεὺς οὐ τολμᾷ” Pi.Pae.6.94, cf. D.21.218, Plu.Sol.25, etc.: mostly in Med., cancel faults, “πάντα ταῦτα” X.HG7.5.18; “ἁμαρτίας” D.14.34; ἀλλύοιτό κα τὸ χρέος discharge the debt, prob. in GDI1151 (Olymp.).
8. suspend, “τὰ περὶ κυνηγέσιον” X.Cyn.5.34.
9. solve the problem of a thing, τὸν Ἰνδὸν ἀ. trace its source, Plu.2.133c.
10. release from a spell, Luc.Vit.Auct.25, cf. Hsch.:—Pass., Men.Her.Fr.6.
11. relieve, Ptol.Tetr.133 (Pass.).
III. intr., loose from moorings, weigh anchor, and so, depart, go away, Plb.3.69.14, Babr.42.8, etc.: metaph., of death, “ἐς θεοὺς ἀνέλυσα” Epigr.Gr. 340.7 (Macestus): abs., die, Ep.Phil.1.23, IG14.1794; “ἀ. ἐκ τοῦ ζῆν” Diog.Oen.2.
2. return, Ev.Luc.12.36; “ἐξ ᾄδου” LXX Wi.2.1.
