ἀνατολή , poet. ἀντ- , (ἀνατέλλω)
A.rising above the horizon, of any heavenly body, e.g. the sun, freq. in pl., “ἀντολαὶ ἠελίοιοOd.12.4, E.Ph.504:—also in sg., “ἀπ᾽ ἀνατολᾶς ἁλίου ἄχρι δύσεωςIG4.606; “δύσεώς τε καὶ ἀνατολῆς ἡλίου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἄστρωνPl.Plt.269a, cf. Lg.807e; dist. from ἐπιτολή (q.v.), Gem.13.3.
3. the quarter of sunrise, east, opp. δύσις, freq. in pl., “ἀπὸ ἡλίου ἀνατολέωνHdt.4.8; “ἡλίου πρὸς ἀντολάςA.Pr.707; without “ἡλίου, πρὸς ἀνατολάςThphr.HP9.15.2, Mon.Anc.Gr.14.12; “πρὸς τὰς .Plb.2.14.4; “ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶνLXX Nu.23.7, Ev.Matt.2.1, etc.
b. the ascendant, i.e. the point where the eastern horizon cuts the zodiac, Ptol.Tetr.20.
c. phase of new moon when 150 distant from sun, Cat.Cod.Astr.8(4).204, Paul.Al.G.3.
