ἀνοκωχεύω , Ion. ἀνακ- ,
A.hold back, stay, hinder, . τὰς νέας keep them riding at anchor, Hdt.6.116 (cf. Hsch. s.v. ἀνακ-), etc.: metaph., of a chariot, hold it in, keep it back, S.El.732; also “. πόλεμονD.H.9.16.
2. . τὸν τόνον τῶν ὅπλων keep up the tension of the ropes, keep them taut, Hdt.7.36.
3. keep afloat, Arist.Cael.313a23.
II. also intr. (sc. ἑαυτόν), keep still, Hdt.9.13; hold back, of ships, D.S. 11.18.—The form ἀνακωχέω support, relieve strain upon, is found in Hp.Art.9, 38, Mochl.2.
