A.exchange one thing with another, “δάκρυα δ᾽ ἀνταλλάσσετε τοῖς τῆσδε μέλεσι” E. Tr.351; τὴν ἀξίωσιν τῶν ὀνομάτων ἐς τὰ ἔργα ἀ. they changed the signification of the names in relation to things, Th.3.82; “τὴν ψυχὴν τοῦ χρυσίου” Poll.3.113.
II. more freq. in Med., take in exchange, “ἄνδρα” A.Ch.133; ἀνταλλάσσεσθαί τί τινος take one thing in exchange for another, E.Hel.1088, etc.; “τι ἀντί τινος” D.16.5; ἀνταλλάσσεσθαι τῇ διανοίᾳ interchange in thought, Pl.Tht.189c; θάνατον ἀνταλλάξεται shall receive death in exchange, i.e. as a punishment, E.Ph.1633:—so in Pass., ἀντηλλαγμένου τοῦ ἑκατέρων τρόπου having made an interchange of each other's custom, i.e. having each adopted the way of the other, Th.4.14.
