ἀντιάω , Hom. uses pres. only in the Ep. forms ἀντιόω, inf. ἀντιάαν, 3pl. imper. ἀντιοώντων, part. ἀντιόων, όωσα, όωντες; but ἀντιόω, which is pres. in Il.1.31, 23.643, serves as fut. in 13.752: fut. ἀντιάσω [α^] Od.22.28, Thgn.(v.infr.): aor.
A.ἠντία^σαHom. (these two tenses in form belong to ἀντιάζω; but such instances as belong in sense to ἀντιάω are given here):—Med., oncein Hom. (v.infr.), A.R. 1.470, 2.24: (ἀντί, ἀντίος):—Ep. Verb:
I. go for the purpose of meeting or receiving:
1. c. gen. rei, goin quest of, when an aim or purpose is implied, “πολέμοιο μενοίνα ἀντιάανIl.13.215; “ὄφρα πόνοιο . . ἀντιάσητον 12.356; οὐκέτ᾽ ἀέθλων ἄλλων ἀντιάσειςOd.22.28, al.: metaph. of an arrow, hit,ἀλλά κεν στέρνων νηδύος ἀντιάσειεIl.13.290:— often of the gods, come (as it were) to meet an offering, and so, in past tenses, to have received, accepted it, “ἀντιόων ταύρων τε καὶ ἀρνειῶν ἑκατόμβηςOd.1.25; “ἀρνῶν κνίσης αἰγῶν τε τελείων . . ἀντιάσαςIl.1.67; generally, partake of, enjoy,αἲ γὰρ . . ὀνήσιος ἀντιάσειενOd.21.402; so “ἔργων ἀντιάσεις χαλεπῶνThgn.1308; “οὔτε του τάφου ἀντιάσας οὔτε γόωνS.El.869: abs., ἀντιάσαις having obtained [his wishes], Pi.I. 6(5).15:—once in Med., “ἀντιάασθε, θεοί, γάμουIl.24.62.
2. more rarely c. gen. pers., match or measure oneself with, ἡμεῖς δ᾽ εἰμὲν τοῖοι οἲ ἂν σέθεν ἀντιάσαιμεν ib.7.231; “δήων ἀντιάσεινThgn.552.
2. c. gen., encounter,ψύχεοςEmp.65.
IV. c. acc. rei, only in ἐμὸν λέχος ἀντιόωσα, euphem. for sharing it, only in Il.1.31.
V. approach as a suppliant, supplicate, like ἀντιάζω 1.2, only in later Ep., c. gen. pers., A.R.1.703: also c. acc. pers., Id.3.694: c. acc. rei, ib. 717.
VI. ἀντιόωσα σελήνη dub. in Orph.Fr.168.16.
