ἀντλ-έω , (ἄντλος)
A.bale out bilge-water, bale the ship, Thgn.673,Alc. 19.
2. generally, draw water, “ἀντλέει καὶ ἐγχέει” Hdt.6.119, Ev.Jo.2.8, etc.; οἷον ἐκ κρήνης ἐπ᾽ ὀχετοὺς ἀ. draw as from a well, and pour into . ., Pl.Ti.79a; “διὰ χώνης τοῖσι βουλομένοις πιεῖν” Pherecr. 108.31: prov. of labour in vain, ἠθμῷ ἀντλεῖν draw water in a sieve, Arist.Oec.1344b25; “εἰς τετρημένον πίθον ἀ.” X.Oec.7.40; but ἐκ πίθω ἀ. of one who has abundance in store, Theoc.10.13; “ἕτοιμον ἀ.” Herod.4.14.
II. metaph., drain dry, i.e.,
1. use the utmost, make the most of, “τὰν ἔμπρακτον ἄντλει μαχανάν” Pi.P.3.62: but more commonly,
2. of toil, suffering, etc., drain to the dregs, “τὴν παροῦσαν ἀντλήσω τύχην” A.Pr.377; “τλημόνως ἤντλουν κακά” Id.Ch. 748; “λυπρὸν ἀντλήσει βίον” E.Hipp.898; δέκα ἀντλήσας ἔτη v.l. Id.Tr.433.
3. squander, “πατρῴαν κτῆσιν ἀντλεῖν” S.El.1291.
III. Pass., “ἀντλούμενος ὄλβῳ” flooded with, Man.4.92.
