A.deliverance, release, relief from a thing, πόνων, πημάτων, ξυμφορᾶς, A.Ag.1,20,Pr.754, S.Ant.1338, etc.: in pl., A.Pr.318, E.Heracl.811; “ἀ. πραγμάτων” Antipho6.35; ἀ. τοῦ πολέμου putting an end to the war, Th.7.2; “οὐκ ἦν τοῦ πολέμου πέρας οὐδ᾽ ἀ.” D.18.145; of contracts, release, discharge, “ἀ. συμβολαίων” Id.33.3; generally, relief from, “τινός” Arist.HA582b12.
2. abs., divorce, in pl., E.Med.236, 1375: sg., PRyl.154.29 (i A.D.), etc.
II. removal, Pl.Lg.736a.
III. (from Pass.) going away, means of getting away or escape, Hdt.1.12, 7.207, al.; τέλος τῆς ἀ. the final departure, Id.2.139; ἡ ἀ. ἐγένετο ἀλλήλων separation of combatants, Th.1.51; “ἐκ τῆς Αἰγύπτου τὴν ἀ. ποιήσασθαι” D.S.15.43.
2. τοῦ βίου departure from life, Hp.Epid.7.89, X.Cyr.5.1.13; “ψυχῆς ἀπὸ σώματος” Pl.Phd.64c: hence ἀ. alone, death, Thphr.HP9.8.3, etc.
3. avoidance, “τῆς μίξεως” Sor.1.31.
