A.forbid, abs., “ἐγὼ δ᾽ ἀπαυδῶ γ᾽” S.Ph.1293; freq. folld. by μή c. inf., “τὸν ἄνδρ᾽ ἀπηύδα . . στέγης μὴ ἔξω παρήκειν” Id.Aj.741; “τὸν ἄνδρ᾽ ἀπαυδῶ τῆσδε γῆς . . μὴ εἰσδέχεσθαί τινα” Id.OT236, cf. E.Rh.934, Supp.468, Ar.Eq.1072: with implied neg., “ἀ. ἐξίστασθαι μύσταισι χοροῖς” Id.Ra.369.
II. decline, refuse, οὔκουν ἀπαυδᾶν δυνατόν ἐστί μοι πόνους E.Supp.342; renounce, “νεῖκος ἀ.” Theoc.22.129; say no, APl.4.299.
III. to be wanting towards, fail, “φίλοισι” E.Andr.87: hence abs., fail, of wood, Thphr.HP5.6.1; “ἀ. πρὸς τὸ περίπατον” Antyll. ap.
