ἀπονίζω , later ἀπονευρ-νίπτω D.S 4.59, Plu.Phoc.18, and once as v.l. in Hom., v. infr.:—
II. wash clean, esp. of the hands and feet, τὴν ἀπονίζουσα φρασάμην I perceived it (the scar) as I was washing his feet, Od.23.75; “ὅταν θυγάτηρ μ᾽ ἀπονίζῃ καὶ τὼ πόδ᾽ ἀλείφῃAr.V.608, cf. Men.Georg.60; “ μὲν ἔφη . τὸν παῖδαPl.Smp. 175a:—Med., χρῶτ᾽ ἀπονίπτεσθαι wash one's body, v.l. in Od.18.179, cf. 172; χεῖράς τε πόδας τε ib.22.478: abs., “οἷον εἴ τις εἰς πηλὸν ἐμβὰς πηλῷ -νίζοιτοHeraclit.5; wash one's hands (esp. after meals, cf. Ar.Byz. ap. Ath.9.408f), Hp.Mul.1.89; “ἐγὼ μὲν ἀποτρέχων ἀπονίψομαιAr.Av.1163; “ἀπονίψασθαι δοτέονwater to wash with, Alex.250, cf. Antiph.136; so in pf. Pass., “ἀπονενίμμεθ᾽Ar.V.1217; “ἀπονενιμμένοςId.Ec.419; also in late Prose, v. supr.; “τῆς κρήνης -νιψάμενοςAlciphr.3.1; but “ἀπονίψασθαι τὸ πρόσωπον ἀπὸ τᾶς κράναςIG4.951.63 (Epid.).
