ἀποσφάλλω , aor. 1 -έσφηλα (v. infr.):—
A.lead astray, drive in baffled course,ὅντινα πρῶτον ἄποσφήλωσιν ἄελλαι ἐς πέλαγοςOd.3.320; μή . . σφας ἀποσφήλειε πόνοιο lest he balk them of the fruits of toil, Il. 5.567.
2. cause to err, Lib.Or.59.147.
II. mostly in Pass., esp. in aor. 2 ἀπεσφάλην [α^], to be balked or disappointed of,τῆς ἐλπίδοςHdt.6.5; to be deprived of,φρενῶνSol.33.4, A.Pr.472; “γνώμηςId.Pers.392; οὐσίας ἀρετῆς ἀπεσφαλμένοι mistaken as to the nature of . ., Pl.Lg.950b; fail in reaching,ἸταλίαςPlu.Pyrrh.15: abs., make a mistake, D.26.3; “ἀποσφάλλεσθαι εἴς τιgo astray, Plu.2.392b: rare in literal sense, miss one's footing,ἀποσφαλεὶς ἐξ ὕψους ἔπεσεId.Per.13.
