ἀράομαι , Aeol. inf.
A.ἄρασθαιSapph.Supp.5.22: fut. ἀράσομαι [α_], Ion. ἀρήσομαι: aor. ἠρησάμην, Aeol. 3pl. “ἀράσαντοSapph.51: pf. ἤρα_μαι (only in compds. ἐπήραμαι, κατήραμαι): (ἀρά): [α_ρ Hom., α^ρ Lyr., Trag.]:—poet. Verb (v. infr.), pray to a god, “ἈπόλλωνιIl.1.35; “δαίμοσιν6.115: once c. acc., invoke,στυγερὰς ἀρήσετ᾽ ἘρινῦςOd.2.135.
c. folld. by optat., ἀρώμενος εἷος ἵκοιο praying till thou should'st come, ib.19.367.
3. pray for,ἔσλα τῷ γάμβρῳSapph.51; “. τινὶ ἀγαθάHdt.1.132: c. inf., “σφᾦν . . θεοῖς ἀρῶμαι μή ποτ᾽ ἀντῆσαι κακῶνS.OC 1445; more freq. in bad sense, imprecate,τί τινιId.OT251; “ἀρὰς . τινίId.OC952, And.1.31, cf. A.Th.633, Pr.912; and without an acc., ἀρᾶσθαί τινι to curse one, E.Alc.714, cf. S.OT1291.
II. Act. only in Ep. aor. inf., ἀρήμεναι μέλλεις you are like to have prayed, Od.22.322.
III. the part. ἀρημένος (q. v.) does not belong to this Verb.
