ἀρήγω [α^], fut.
A.“-ξω” Com.Adesp.12.5D., etc.:—aid, succour, “τινί” Il. 2.363, al. (never in Od.); in Hom. always, succour in war, freq. c. dat. pers. et modi, “μάχῃ Τρώεσσιν ἀ.” 1.521, 5.507; “ὄμοσσον ἦ μέν μοι . . ἔπεσιν καὶ χερσὶν ἀ.” 1.77: generally, help, succour, “λέχει Ἀλκμήνας” Pi.N.1.49; “νεότατι ἀ. θράσος” Id.P.2.63; “θνητοῖς” A.Pr.269, etc.; in mock Trag. passages of Com., “γυναῖκες, οὐκ ἀρήξετ᾽;” Ar.Th.696, cf. Pl.476: rare in Prose, Hecat.30J., etc.; “ὁ ναυτικὸς τῷ πεζῷ ἀρήξει” Hdt.7.236; “τοῖς φίλοις ἀ.” X.Cyr.1.5.13; “ἀ. σὺν ὅπλοις τῇ χώρᾳ” Id.Oec.5.7; to be good for a patient or his case, Hp.Prorrh.2.30, cf. Acut.65.
2. impers., c. inf., it is good or fit, “φέρειν ἀρήγει” Pi.P.2.94; “σιγᾶν ἀρήγει” A.Eu.571.
II. c. acc. rei, ward off, prevent, ὄλεθρον v.l. in Batr.279; “ἄρηξον . . ἅλωσιν” A.Th.119 (lyr.); ἀ. τινί τι ward off from one, “φόνον τέκνοις” E.Med.1275 (lyr.), cf. Tr.777. (Perh. cognate with Lat. rēx, Skt. rā´jati 'rule'.)
