II. artery, as distinct from a vein, “αἱ φλεβῶν καὶ ἀρτηριῶν κοινωνίαιHp.Art.45, cf. 69; “τὰς δὲ φλέβας καὶ τὰς . συνάπτειν εἰς ἀλλήλας . . τῇ αἰσθήσει φανερὸν εἶναιArist.Spir.484a1; . λεῖαι (cf. I) Gal.UP8.1, al.; . φλεβώδης pulmonary vein, ib.6.10; believed to contain πνεῦμα by Erasistr., ib. 17, and derived fr. ἀήρ, τηρέω by Bacch. ap. Erot. s.v. ἀορτέων.
