A.townsman, citizen, Il.11.242, Od.13.192, etc.; dist. from πολίτης, ἀστός being one who has civil rights only, πολίτης one who has political rights also, Arist.Pol.1278a34; “. πικρὸς πολίταιςE. Med.223; οἱ . the commons, opp. οἱ ἀγαθοί, Pi.P.3.71, cf. Isoc.3.21; opp. ξένος, Pi.O.7.90, Hdt.2.160, 3.8; esp. at Athens, Lys.6.17, Pl. Ap.30a, Isoc. l.c., cf. S.OT817, OC13, etc.; opp. μέτοικος, ξένος, Pl. R.563a; in Egypt, citizen of Alexandria (cf. “ἄστυ11.3), PGnom.38, al. —Fem. ἀστή, q. v., but Ἀστός fem. as epith. of Κόρη, IG12(5).225 (Paros, v B.
