ἀτέλ-εστος , ον,
A.without end, issue, or effect, unaccomplished, “ἅλιον θεῖναι πόνον ἠδ᾽ ἀ.” Il.4.26, cf. 57,168, Od.2.273; “σῖτον ἔδοντες μὰψ αὔτως ἀ.” 16.111; “τὰ δέ κεν θεὸς ἢ τελέσειεν ἤ κ᾽ ἀτέλεστ᾽ εἴη” 8.571, cf. Tab.Defix.Aud.68b: rare in Prose, of prayers, not deserving of accomplishment, Antipho 1.22; ἀ. κῶνος truncated cone, Hero *Stereom.1.16: neut. pl. as Adv., inconclusively, “ἀ. λαλεῖν” AP12.21 (Strat.).
