αἰνίσσομαι , Att. αἰνίκ-ττομαι : fut. -ίξομαι: aor. ᾐνιξάμην : (αἶνος):—
A.speakdarkly or in riddles, “μῶνᾐνιξάμην;S.Aj.1158; λόγοισικρυπτοῖσιν αἰ. E.Ion430; γνωρίμως αἰνίξομαι so as to be understood, Id.El.946: c. acc. cogn., “λόγον . . αἰνίξατοPi.P.8.40; αἰνίσσεσθαι ἔπεα to speak riddling verses, Hdt.5.56: c. acc. rei, hint a thing, intimate, shadow forth, Pl.Ap.21b, Tht.152c; “τὸ δίκαιον εἴηR.332b; ὅτι . . Phd.69c; αἰ. εἰς . . to refer as in a riddle to, to hint at, “εἰς Κλέωνα τοῦτ᾽ αἰνίττεταιAr.Pax47; τὴν Κυλλήνην . . εἰς τὴν χεῖρ᾽ ὀρθῶς ᾐνίξατο used the riddling word Cyllene (cf. κυλλός) . ., Id.Eq.1085; so “ᾐνίξαθ᾽ Βάκις τοῦτο πρὸς τὸν ἀέραId.Av.970; “αἰνιττόμενος εἰς ἐμέAeschin.2.108; αἰ. ὡς . . Ps.-Plu. Vit.Hom.4:—αἰ. τὸν ὠκεανόν form guesses about it, Arist.Mete.347a6.
