2. mostly Subst., one who works his land himself (not by slaves), husbandman, E.Or.920, Th.1.141, X.Oec. 5.4, etc.: generally, one who works for himself, Pl. R.565a, Arist.Rh.1381a24.
b. metaph., αὐ. τῆς φιλοσοφίας one that has worked at philosophy by himself, without a teacher, X.Smp. 1.5; αὐ. τῆς ταλαιπωρίας engaging in hard service oneself, Plb.3.17.8: Sup., Jul.ad Them.264a.
II. Pass., self-wrought, i. e. rudely wrought, D.H.Dem.39, Comp.19 (Comp.); simple, native,μέλοςAP 9.264 (Apollonid. or Phil.).
