2. in welcoming or saluting (as we shake hands), “δεξιὰν διδόναιAr.Nu.81; προτείνειν, ἐμβάλλειν, etc. (v. sub vocc.); esp. as a sign of assurance, pledge or treaty,σπονδαὶ . . καὶ δεξιαὶ ᾗς ἐπέπιθμενIl.2.341; δεξιὰς δόντες καὶ λαβόντες having exchanged assurances, X.An.7.3.1, cf. 1.1.6; δεξιὰς παρὰ βασιλέως φέρειν μὴ μνησικακήσειν bring pledges that he would not . ., ib.2.4.1; “δεξιᾶς πίστις μεγίστηE.Med.21; φυλάσσειν, τηρεῖν τὴν δ., PFay.124.13, POxy.533.18:—χείρ is never expressed in Hom., but is used later, “χεῖρα δ.S.Ph.912, 1254, etc.; “φεῦ δ. χείρE.Med.496; χειρὸς δ. ib.899, etc.; “τὴν χεῖρα δὸς τὴν δ.Ar.Nu.81.
