ἑσμός , ὁ, (ἕζομαι)
A.that which settles, esp. a swarm of bees, Hdt.5.114, Pl.Lg.708b, X.HG3.2.28 ; “ἑ. λαμβάνειν” Plu.Dio24 ; of wasps, καθ᾽ ἑσμούς in swarms, Ar.V.1107.
2. any swarm or flock, ἑ. ὑβριστής, of men, A.Supp.30(anap.) ; ἑ. ὡς πελειάδων ἵζεσθε ib.223 ; “γυναικῶν” Ar.Lys.353, etc. ; “[τεχνιτ] ῶν” Pae.Delph.14 ; “στρατιᾶς” Epigr.Gr.985 (Philae).
3. (ἵημι) of things, ἑσμοὶ γάλακτος streams of milk, E.Ba. 710 ; ἑ. μελίσσης γλυκύς, i.e. honey, Epin.1.7 ; “ἑ. νούσων” A.Supp. 684 (lyr.); “λόγων” Pl.R.450b ; “πληγῶν” Ph.2.95 ; “παθῶν” Porph.Abst. 1.34.
4. = ὁδός, Hsch.; “πατρίδος καλῆς τὸν ἐπάξιον ἑ. ἑλέσθαι” Arch.Pap.1.220(ii B.C.). (ἐ-freq.in codd., but cf. Ar.V.l.c., Eust.178.16.)
