ἔμπα^λιν , Adv., in Trag. and Prose freq. with Art., τὸ ἔμπαλιν or τοὔμπαλιν , τὰ ἔμπαλιν (as always in Hdt.) or τἄμπαλιν :—
b. τὸ . καὶ ἀνάπαλιν as before and vice versa, Nech. ap. Vett.Val.154.28.
II. contrariwise, the opposite way, τοὔ. σπεύδειν, κραίνειν, A.Pr.204, Ag.1424; “λέγεινS.Tr. 358; ἀνατρέπειν . turn upside down, E.Ba.348; . ὑποδεῖσθαι to put on one's shoes contrariwise (i.e. on the wrong feet), Pl.Tht.193c; ἐκ τοὔ. . . from the opposite side to . ., Th.3.22.
2. c. gen., contrary to, τέρψιος, γνώμας ., Pi.O.12.11, P.12.32; τὰ . πρήσσων τοῦ πεζοῦ doing the opposite thing to the army, Hdt.7.58; τἄ. τῶνδε the reverse of these things, A.Pers.223; τοὔ. πεσεῖν φρενῶν to be brought to the opposite opinion, E.Hipp.390; “τοὔ. οὗ βούλονταιX.Cyr.8.4.32; folld. by , Emp.100.20; “γνώμην ἔχω τὰ . οὗτοιHdt.1.207; “ἤϊσαν τὰ . ΛακεδαιμόνιοιId.9.56.
3. on the contrary, Nic.Th.288, Ph. 1.264, Porph.Abst.1.44; f.l. for ἔμπολιν in S.OC637; τοὔ. on the other hand, Epicur.Ep.3p.63U.
