A.means of defence: mostly in pl., battlements, Il.12.263, Hdt.9.7, A.Th.30,158 (lyr.), E.Ph.1158, etc.; “τὰς . ἀπώσαντεςTh.3.23; “αἱ οἰκίαι . . ἐπάλξεις λαμβάνουσιId.4.69, cf. 115.
b. in sg., mostly, line of battlements, parapet, Il.12.381,al. (never in Od.); οἱ παρ᾽ ἔπαλξιν the defenders of the wall, Th.2.13, cf. 7.28, Ar.Ach.72: pl., of individual crenellations, Th.3.21.
2. generally, defence, protection,πλούτουA.Ag.381 (lyr.); “σωτηρίαςE.Or.1203, etc.
