A.stand out or project from, “τινός” Ar.V.1377; “πέτρα ἐξέχουσα ὑπὲρ κοιλάδος” SIG827 iii 11 (ii A. D.).
2. abs., stand out, be prominent, Hp.VC1; “ἐξέχοντα ὦτα” Corn.ND27; ἐξέχοντα convexities, opp. κοῖλα, Pl.R.602c; τὸ ἐξέχον in painting, Philostr.VA2.20:—Pass., τὰ ἐξεχόμενα projecting panels, LXX 3 Ki.7.16(29).
b. of the sun, shine out, appear, “ἢν ἐξέχῃ ἕλη κατ᾽ ὄρθρον” Ar.V.771; ἔξεχ᾽, ὦ φίλ᾽ ἥλιε shine out, fair sun, Id.Fr.389; πρὶν ἥλιον ἐ. before sunrise, Lexap. D.43.62.
c. metaph., to be prominent, distinguished, “ἀρετῇ” Ascl. Tact.7.2; “ὁ ἐξέχων ἀνήρ” Demetr.Eloc.146; “οἱ τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἐξέχοντες” Hdn.2.7.7; ἐξέχει ἐν ἑκάστῳ ἄλλο each has its own distinction, Plot.5.8.4.
II. to be attached to, depend on, cling to, “τοῦ θείου” Porph. Marc.11:—but usu. Med., “τινός” D.H.1.79, POxy.1027.6 (i A.D.), D.Chr.45.5; “σώματα ψυχῶν ἐξέχεται” Dam.Pr.99, cf. Procl.Inst.100 (but prob. corrupt in sense give up, withdraw from, J.AJ3.12.3).
