ἐκεχειρία , ἡ, (ἔχω, χείρ)
A.cessation of hostilities, armistice, truce, IG 12.96.22, etc. ; “ἐ. ποιεῖσθαι” Th. 4.117 ; ἄγειν, ἔχειν, Id.5.26, X. HG 4.2.16 ; “ἐ. γίγνεταί τισι πρὸς ἀλλήλους” Th. 4.58 ; ἀπειπεῖν τὴν ἐ. denounce the truce, Id.5.32 ; “ἡ Ὀλυμπιακὴ ἐ.” Arist. Fr. 533 ; Dor. ἐκεχηπία IG 22.1126.49, cf. SIG559.32 (Megalop., found at Magn. Mae.).
2. generally, rest from work, holiday, J. AJ 1.1.1, Luc. Herm. 11, Sammelb. 4224.17 ; “ἐ. πόνων” Jul. Or. 4.153c ; leisure, opportunity, τοῦ διαμαρτάνειν, εἰς τὸ ἁμαρτάνειν, Ph. 1.430, 2.76 : c. inf., ib. 444.
3. in Ar. Pax 908 ὑπέχοντα τὴν ἐκεχειρίαν is a pun —'alleging the truce', and 'presenting the hand-for-holding' (as a beggar does).
4. licence, leave, to do a thing, “ἐ. διδόναι τινί” Ph. 2.542 ; coupled with ἄδεια, ib. 447, al. ; time of licence, ib. 529.
5. self-restraint, abstinence, “περὶ τὰς κλοπάς” Str. 15.1.53.
