ἐμφαν-ής , ές,
A.showing in itself, reflecting, of mirrors, Pl.Ti. 46a.
II. visible to the eye, manifest,
a. of persons, S.Tr.199, etc.; esp. of the gods appearing bodily among men, E.Ba.22, Ar.V. 733, Pl.Alc.2.141a; so “ὄψις ἐ. ἐνυπνίων” A.Pers.518; “τέκμαρ” Ch.667; ἐ. τινὰ ἰδεῖν see him bodily, S.Aj.538, cf. Ar. Th.682; “μαθεῖν” S.El. 1454; πῶς ἂν ὑμὶν ἐμφανὴς . . γενοίμην; how could I make it manifest? Id.Ph.531; ἐμφανὴς τιμαῖσιν, = ἐμφανῶς τιμώμενος, Id.OT909 (lyr.); ἐ. ζῷα familiar animals, Epicur.Ep.2p.43U.
b. as legal term, ἐμφανῆ παρέχειν τινά to produce a person or thing in open court, Antipho 5.36, cf. D.56.38; so ἐμφανῆ καταστῆσαι produce in court, either the property or the vouchers, Id.52.10; ἐμφανῶν κατάστασις, actio ad exhibendum, Is.6.31, D.53.14.
c. of things, “οὐ γάρ ἐστι τἀμφανῆ κρύπτειν” S.OC755; ἐ. τεκμήρια visible proofs, Id.El.1109; ἄλγος ἐ. Pi.Fr.210; “κλαυθμός” Hdt.1.111; μεῖξις ib.203; “Χυμοί” Thphr. CP6.3.4 (Sup.); ἐ. κόσμος visible sky, Vett. Val.8.12; τὰ ἐ. κτήματα the actual property, X.HG5.2.10; “τοῦ μέλλοντος καὶ μὴ -οῦς” Th.3.42; εἰς τοὐμφανὲς ἰέναι to come into light, come forward, X. 2. manifest, palpable, “τυραννίς” Ar.V.417; “βία” Th.4.86; ἐ. λόγος a plain speech, A.Eu.420; τῷ ἐμφανεῖ λόγῳ openly, Th.7.48; “τὴν διάνοιαν ἐ. ποιεῖν διὰ φωνῆς” Pl.Tht.206d; “ἐμφανές ἐστιν ὅτι . .” X.Hier.9.10.
3. wellknown, τὰ ἐ. Hdt.2.33; “ἐμφανῆ γὰρ ἦν” S.Ant.448; conspicuous, notable, “ἀνήρ” D.S.1.68.
III. Adv. -νῶς, Ion. -νέως, visibly, openly, Hdt.1.140, A.Ag.626, Th.7.48, etc.; “λέγειν” Ar.Ach.312; ἐ. ἐλευθεροῦν without doubt, Hdt.6.123; ἐ. ἠμύνατο openly, i.e. not secretly or treacherously, S.Tr.278; οὐ λόγοις, ἀλλ᾽ ἐ. but really, Ar.Nu.611: Comp. “-έστερον” Pl.Phlb.31e.
