A.trading-station, mart, factory, Hdt.1.165, al., Th.1.100, Ar.Av. 1523, IPE12.47.9 (Olbia, i A. D.), etc.; “προστάται τοῦ ἐ.” Hdt.2.178; ἐ. παρέχειν, of Corinth, Th.1.13.
b. market-centre for a district which had no πόλις, SIG880.22 (Macedonia, iii A. D.).
2. τὸ ἐ., at Athens, the Exchange, where the merchants resorted, “δανείσασθαι Χρήματα ἐν τῷ ἐμπορίῶ” D.35.1, cf. 18.309; ἐκ τοὐμπορίου τινές foreign merchants, Diph.17.3, cf. 43.9.
