ἐπίσχω , redupl. pres. of ἐπέχω,
A.hold or direct towards, “ἐπίσχειν ὠκέας ἵππους” Il.17.465; νῶϊν against us, Hes.Sc.350 ; [σελάννα] “φάος ἐπίσχει θάλασσαν ἐπ᾽ ἀλμύραν” Sapph.Supp.25.9.
II. restrain, keep in check, “ἔπισχε μένος” Hes.Sc.446; τόδε γε [τὸ δέος] “οὐδὲν ἐπίσχει” Th.3.45, cf. Pl.Lg.932e, Phlb.45d; “τὸ ἐπίσχον” obstruction, Arist.Cael. 311a9: c. gen., “ἐπίσχετε θυμὸν ἐνιπῆς καὶ χειρῶν” Od.20.266 ; “τινὰ τοῦ θράσους” Pl.Hp.Ma.298a:—Med., “ἐπισχόμεναι ἑανῶν πτύχας” girding up, h.Cer.176 ; “ἐπίσχετ᾽ ὀργῇ χεῖρας” Euphro 8.3 (dub.):—Pass., to be stopped, “ἐπίσχεται τὸ τῆς κοιλίας” Thphr.Sud.20.
III. intr., leave off, stop, wait, “ἔπισχε” hold! E.El.758.
2. c. gen., cease from, “τοῦ γράφειν” Pl.Phdr.257c, cf. Prm.152b.
