II. in pl., ἐπίχειρα , τά, prop. wages of manual labour : hence, wages, pay,
1. of reward, Ar.V.581, Trag.Adesp.116, Theoc.Ep.18.8 ; “ἀρετῆς .Pl. R.608c ; ironically in D.Ep.3.38, Plb.8.12.5, etc.: rarely in sg., Id.38.3.2.
2. more freq. of punishment,τοιαῦτα τῆς ὑψηγόρου γλώσσης.. τἀπίχειρα γίγνεταιA.Pr.321, cf. Antipho 1.20, Arr.Epict.3.24.24, Ph.1.512, etc.; “τῆς προπετείας πικρὰ κομίζονται τἀ.Phld.Ir.p.32 W.; ξιφέων . λαχοῦσα the wages of the sword, i.e. slaughter by it, S.Ant.820 (lyr.). (Sts. written ἐπιχείρια in codd., vulg. in Hp. Praec.1.)
