ἐπιβα^τ-εύω ,
A.set one's foot upon, occupy, c. gen., “ΣυρίαςPlu.Ant.28, cf. Luc.Cont. 2: metaph., take one's stand upon, τοῦ Σμέρδιος οὐνόματος ἐπιβατεύων usurping it, Hdt.3.63, cf. 67,9.95; “τῆς ἡγεμονίαςD.C.79.7; τὸτῆς οὐσίας ἓν -εῦονDam.Pr.88; τούτου . τοῦ ῥήματος rely upon . . , Hdt.6.65.
II.. to be an ἐπιβάτης, passenger or soldier on board ship, .ἐπὶ [νεῶν] ib.15, al., Luc.Par.46; “ἐπὶ νηίPl.La.183d: c.dat., Ar.Ra.48 (with an obscene allusion, cf. “ἐπιβαίνωA. 111.3).
