ἐπιτιμ-έω , Hdt.6.39, Schwyzer 346.11 (ii B. C.):—
A.lay a value upon : hence,
1. show honour to, τινά Hdt.l.c.
2. raise in price,οἶνον . πολύDiph.32.27 : abs., Ael.NA10.50; τὴν αἴτησιν . raise the demand, Anon. ap. Suid.:—Pass., rise in price, of corn, D.34.39, 50.6, PSI4.356.7 (iii A.D.).
II. of judges, lay a penalty on a person, τοῖς ἐξάρνοις . ταλάντου ἑκάστῳ v.l. in Aeschin.1.113 ; “. ἀργύριονHermes 17.4 (Delos) ; but . τὴν ἀρχαίην δίκην make the original trial the ground of punishment, Hdt.4.43.
2. object to one as blameable,τινί τιPl.Phdr.237c, Isoc.1.17, etc.:—Pass., Arist.Po.1455a26.
b. c. acc. rei only, censure,οὐ τοῦτ᾽ ἐπιτιμῶD.20.148, cf. Anaxandr.49:—Pass., “τὸ..ὑπὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἐπιτιμώμενονX.Mem.1.2.31, cf. Arist.EN1114a29.
