ἐπιτιμ-έω , Hdt.6.39, Schwyzer 346.11 (ii B. C.):—
A.lay a value upon : hence,
1. show honour to, τινά Hdt.l.c.
2. raise in price, “οἶνον ἐ. πολύ” Diph.32.27 : abs., Ael.NA10.50; τὴν αἴτησιν ἐ. raise the demand, Anon. ap. Suid.:—Pass., rise in price, of corn, D.34.39, 50.6, PSI4.356.7 (iii A.D.).
II. of judges, lay a penalty on a person, τοῖς ἐξάρνοις ἐ. ταλάντου ἑκάστῳ v.l. in Aeschin.1.113 ; “ἐ. ἀργύριον” Hermes 17.4 (Delos) ; but ἐ. τὴν ἀρχαίην δίκην make the original trial the ground of punishment, Hdt.4.43.
2. object to one as blameable, “τινί τι” Pl.Phdr.237c, Isoc.1.17, etc.:—Pass., Arist.Po.1455a26.
b. c. acc. rei only, censure, “οὐ τοῦτ᾽ ἐπιτιμῶ” D.20.148, cf. Anaxandr.49:—Pass., “τὸ..ὑπὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἐπιτιμώμενον” X.Mem.1.2.31, cf. Arist.EN1114a29.
c. c. dat. only, rebuke, censure, of persons, Lys.24.17 ; of things, “τοῖς ψηφισθεῖσιν” Isoc.8.52; “τοῖς πεπραγμένοις” D.18.64 ; “τοῖς ἀνέμοις” Ev.Matt.8.26; “τινὶ περί τι” Plb.8.9.1 ; “τινὶ ὡς..” D.12.7 ; “τῷ λόγῳ, ὅτι..” Pl.Tht.169d:— Pass., “ἐπιτετιμημένος ἐπί τινι” Plb.7.12.9.
d. abs., λόγῳ καλῶς ἐ. by word, Th.3.38, cf. 4.28 ; “τὸ μὲν ἐπιτιμᾶν..φήσαι τις ἂν ῥᾴδιον εἶναι” D.1.16, cf. Arist.Pol.1284a27.
