ἐπιτροπ-ή , ἡ,
A.reference, esp. to an arbiter in decision of a law-suit, “ἠξίουν δίκης ἐπιτροπὴν σφίσι γενέσθαι ἢ ἐς πόλιν τινὰ ἢ ἰδιώτην” Th.5.41 ; ἡ ἐ. “τούτῳ πρὸς Παρμένοντα γέγονε” D.33.23 ; εἰς ἐ. ἔρχεσθαι ib.14 ; ἡ ἐ. ἐγένετό μοι ib.16 ; τὴν ἐ. λῦσαι ibid.; ἀνέντες τὴν ἐ. having declined it, Th. 5.31.
2. generally, power to decide, “ἐ. διδόναι τινὶ περί τινος” Hp. Decent.17, cf. Schwyzer 195.10 (Crete (from Delos), ii B.C.); “διδόναι τῇ συγκλήτῳ τὴν ἐ.” Plb.18.39.5 ; διδόναι ἑαυτοὺς εἰς ἐ., or τὴν ἐ. διδόναι περὶ σφῶν αὐτῶν, Lat. dedere se in fidem, to surrender absolutely, Id.2.11.8,15.8.14, etc.; ἐ. λαβεῖν εἰς τὸ διαλῦσαι to receive full powers to treat, Id.3.15.7, cf. D.H.2.45, D.S.17.47 ; “μετ᾽ ἐξουσίας καὶ ἐ.” Act.Ap.26.12.
II. guardianship, Pl.Lg.924b, etc.; ἐπιτροπῆς κατάστασις, διαδικασία, Arist.Ath.56.6 ; “ἀποχὴ τῆς ἐ.” POxy.898.24 (ii A.D.); ἐπιτροπῆς δικάζεσθαι, of an action brought by a ward against a guardian, Lys.Fr.27 ; “καταγιγνώσκειν τὴν ἐ.” D.29.58 ; “ἐπιτροπῆς κρίνειν τινά” Plu.2.844c.
2. office of a Roman procurator, “ἡ τοῦ ἰδίου λόγου ἐ.” BGU16.8 (ii A.D.): generally, stewardship, PLond.2.454.10 (iv A.D.).
