ἐποπτ-εύω , (ἐπόπτης)
A.overlook, watch, of an overseer, “ἔργα τ᾽ ἐποπτεύεσκε” Od.16.140, cf. Hes.Op.767 ; “Ἑρμῆ..πατρῶ᾽ͅ ἐποπτεύων κράτη” A.Ch.1 ; ἐ. μάχην ib.489 ; ὁ πάντ᾽ ἐ. τάδε ἥλιος ib.993(985); “δίκας” Id.Eu.224 ; “ἄλλοτε δ᾽ ἄλλον ἐποπτεύει Χάρις φόρμιγγι” Pi.O.7.11 ; “αἰῶνας -εύουσα χελιδών” IGRom.4.235(hex.).
2. visit, punish, “κότῳ” A.Eu.220.
3. abs., keep watch, “οἱ περὶ τοὺς νόμους ἐποπτεύοντες” Pl.Lg.951d.
II. become an ἐπόπτης, be admitted to the highest grade at the mysteries, Id.Ep.333e, Plu.Demetr.26 : c. acc., view as an ἐπόπτης, Pl.Phdr.250c : prov., of attaining to the highest earthly happiness, “ἐποπτεύειν δοκῶ” Ar. Ra.745.
III. study, meditate on, c. dat., “καθαρῇσιν ἐ. μελέτῃσιν” Emp. 110.2. (Cf. ἐπιοπτεύω.）
