ἐρωτ-άω , Ep. and Ion. εἰρωτάω, contr. in Hom. and best codd. of Hdt., as 3.119,4.145,al. : impf.
A.“ἠρώτων” Hp.Epid.7.3, (ἐπ-) Th.7.10, etc. ; “εἰρώτα” Od.15.423 ; Ion. “εἰρώτευν” Hdt.1.158, part. -τεῦντας v.l. in 3.62 (elsewh. “εἰρώτων” 3.140): fut. “-ήσω” Hp.VM15, Pl.R.350e, etc. : aor. I “ἠρώτησα” X.Cyr.4.5.21, S.Tr.403, etc. : pf. “ἠρώτηκα” Pl.Phlb. 18a:—used in Att. to supply the defective tenses of ἔρομαι:—ask, τινά τι something of one, “ἅ μ᾽ εἰρωτᾷς” Od.4.347 ; “εἰρωτᾷς μ᾽ ὄνομα κλυτόν” 9.364 ; “ὅσ᾽ ἄν σ᾽ ἐρωτῶ” S.OT1122 ; “οὐ τοῦτ᾽ ἐρωτῶ σ᾽” Ar.Nu.641:—Pass., to be asked, τι Pl.Lg.895e, X.Cyr.1.4.3.
2. ἐ. τι ask about a thing, A.Pr.228, Pl.R.508a ; “τιπερί τινος” Id.Tht.185c ; ἐ. ἐρώτημα to ask a question, Id.R.487e ; τὰς πύστεις ἐρωτῶντες εἰ.. putting the question, whether.., Th.1.5:—Pass., τὸ ἐρωτηθέν, τὸ ἐρωτώμενον ἀποκρίνασθαι, to answer the question, Th.3.61, X.Mem.4.2.23, etc. ; “τὰ ἔμπροσθεν ἠρωτημένα” Pl.Lg.662e:—Pass., also with person as subject, ἐρωτηθεὶς τὸ καλόν asked about beauty, Id.Hp.Ma.289c.
3. folld. by indirect question, “εἰρώτα..τίς εἴη καὶ πόθεν ἔλθοι” Od.15.423 ; ἐ. εἰ.. or ἤν.. to ask whether.., Hp.Steril.230, cf. Th.8.53 ; “ἐ. ἦ..” A. Th.181 ; “αἰτίαν καθ᾽ ἥντινα” Id.Pr.228 ; “πότεροι..” Ar.Ach.648 ; “τοῦτο πρῶτον ἠρώτα, πότερον..” X.An.3.1.7 ; “ἐ. πῶς δεῖ ποιεῖν” Id.Mem.1.3.1.
II. question a person, “εἰρωτᾷς μ᾽ ἐλθόντα θεὰ θεόν” Od.5.97 ; “ἐ. καὶ ἐλέγχειν” Antipho 6.23 ; “τινα ἀμφί τινος” E.Ion236(lyr.):— Pass., to be questioned, “ἐρωτᾶσθαι θέλω” Id.IA1130.
b. of sentries, challenge, Aen.Tact.22.12 ; τὸ ἐρωτώμενον the password, Id.26.9.
2. in Dialectic, opp. demonstration, question an opponent in order to refute him from his answers, Arist.APr.24a24 ; τι ib.42a39 ; hence later, submit, set forth, propound an argument, “λόγον” Gal.5.257:—Pass., “ὁ λόγος..ἠρωτῆσθαι φαίνεται” Arr.Epict.2.19.1 ; “ἐρωτηθέντος τοῦ σοφίσματος” S.E.P.2.237.
III. later, = αἰτέω, beg, entreat, “ἐ. τινὰ τὰ εἰς εἰρήνην” LXX IKi.30.21, al. ; ἐρωτᾶτε τὰ εἰς εἰρήνην τὴν Ἱερουσαλήμ ib.Ps.121(122).6 ; “ἅ σε ἐρωτῶ” PMag.Par.1.272 ; “ἐ. τινὰ ποιεῖν τι” POxy.292.7(i A.D.), Ev.Luc.8.37, etc. ; ἐ. τινὰ ἵνα.. ib.7.36 ; ὅπως.. ib.7.3, al., PMag.Leid.W.16.13 ; “ἐ. τὸν πατέρα περὶ ὑμῶν” Ev.Jo.16.26.
