A.singe, esp. of singeing off the bristles of swine before they are cooked, “εὗσέ τε μίστυλλέν τε καὶ ἀμφ᾽ ὀβελοῖσιν ἔπειρενOd.14.75, cf. 426, 2.300; “σύες εὑόμενοι τανύοντο διὰ φλογόςIl.9.468; so of the Cyclops, “πάντα δέ οἱ βλέφαρ᾽ ἀμφὶ καὶ ὀφρύας εὗσεν ἀϋτμήOd.9.389: metaph., of a shrewish wife, “ἄνδρα . . εὕει ἄτερ δαλοῦHes.Op.705 (αὔει codd. Stob.). (Sts. εὔω in codd., v.l. Il.9.468 (cf. EM401.24), Od.2.300 (cf. EM398.34), Hes.l.c.: but v. ἀφ-εύω, ἐφεύω; cf. Lat. uro fr. *eus-ō.
