εὖτε , Ep., Ion., and poet. Adv. (rare in Trag., never in Com. or Att. Prose):
I. of Time, when,
1. with ind., of a definite occurrence in past time, εὖτέ μιν προὔπεμψεν when he sent him, Il.8.367, cf. 11.735, 23.85, E.Ion888 (lyr.): with impf., “ἤκουσας . . εὖτε ὁρμῶμενHdt.7.209, prob. in B.3.25: freq. with a corresp. Particle in apodosi, “τῆμος δήOd.13.93; “δὴ τότε γε22.182; “καὶ τότε δή ῥα24.147; “τόφρα δέ20.73; “δέIl.23.62, Od.17.359; “δ᾽ ἄρα20.56: the clause with εὖτε may stand last, Il.5.396,6.515, Pi.O.3.28.
2. with subj., εὖτ᾽ ἄν (like ὅταν), a. referring to future time, οὔ τι δυνήσεαι χραισμεῖν, εὖτ᾽ ἂν πολλοὶ πίπτωσι when many shall be falling, Il.1.242, cf. 2.34, A.Pers.230 (troch.).
b. with pres. in apod., whenever, so often as, ἥμισυ ἀρετῆς ἀποαίνυται, εὖτ᾽ ἄν μιν κατὰ δούλιον ἦμαρ ἕλῃσιν whenever it comes upon him, Od.17.323, cf. 320, Hdt.6.27, A.Ag.12: in orat.obl. (for opt. after past tense), Pi.O.6.67: ἄν is sts. omitted, εὖτ᾽ ἔρδωμεν whenever we offer, Od.7.202, cf. Hes.Th. 28, B.1.73, A.Th.338 (lyr.), A.R.2.801, AP14.45.
3. with opt., whenever, as often as, with impf. in apodosi, εὖτε μάχοιτυ whenever he fought, Hes.Sc.164, cf. h.Hom.18.8, B.12.118, A.Ag.565, A.R.2.471.
II. causal, since, with aor. ind., S.Aj.716 (lyr.), OC84, Ph. 1098 (lyr.).
III. Adv. of Comparison, for ἠΰτε, as, twice in Il., εὖτ᾽ ὄρεος κορυφῇσι κτλ. 3.10; τῷ δ᾽ εὖτε πτερὰ γίγνετ' 19.386 (so Aristarch., but with vv.ll.ὥστε, αὖτε): freq. in Q.S., 1.549, al.
