εὐκταῖος , α, ον, (εὔχομαι) Att. Adj. (used chiefly by Trag., cf. ἀραῖος):
1. of or for prayer, votive, “Ἄιδου . . εὐκταίαν χάρινA.Ag. 1387; “τρίτην Διὸς σωτῆρος εὐκταίαν λίβαId.Fr.55; “εὐχαίAr.Av. 1060; “ἐπῳδαίPl.Lg.906b; εὐ. [νύμφα] devoted, E.IT213 (lyr.); πανηγύρεις εὐ., Lat. ludi votivi, D.C.58.12: εὐκταῖα, τά, votive offerings, vows, prayers, A.Supp.631 (lyr.), S.Tr.239.
2. epith. of gods, invoked in or by special prayer, πατρὸς εὐκταίαν Ἐρινύν, πατρόθεν εὐκταία φάτις, of the curse invoked by Oedipus, A.Th.723, 841 (both lyr.); “Θέμις εὐκταίαE.Med.169 (anap.); “τοῖσι δυστυχοῦσιν εὐκταία θεόςId.Or.214.
3. generally, prayed for, desired, ἠώς, λιμένες, AP6.242 (Crin.), 9.41 (Theon); “γάμος γὰρ . . εὐκταῖον κακόνMen.Mon.102, cf. Epicur.Sent.Vat.35; desirable, f.l. for εὐκτέον in Pl.Lg.687e: Sup., τήβεννος (of the latus clavus), AJA18.323 (Sardes, i B.C.); “ἴασιςGal. 7.738, cf. Luc.Tyr.17.
