εὐώνυμ-ος (A), ον, (ὄνομα)
A.of good name, honoured, Hes.Th.409, Pi.O.2.7, etc.; εὐ. χάρις the honour of a good name, Id.P.11.58; δίκη . . μὴ εὐ. not creditable, Pl.Lg. 754e.
2. expressed in well-chosen terms, “λόγος” Luc.Lex.1.
II. having an auspicious name or sound, “ἀριστοκρατία” Pl.Plt.302d; “πρόσρημα” D.C.52.4.
2. prosperous, fortunate, δίκα, πόδες, Pi.N. 7.48, 8.47, cf. Eust.895.37.
3. epith. of Artemis, “Ἀρχ. Ἐφ.” 1914.20 (Gonni, iv/iii B.C.).
III. euphem. (like ἀριστερός) for left, on the left hand (because bad omens came from the left), ὠλένη εὐ. S.Tr.926; “ἐξ εὐωνύμου χειρός” Hdt.7.109; ἐξ εὐωνύμου (sc. χειρός) Id.1.72; κατὰ τὰ εὐ. X.Lac.11.10; “εἰς τὰ εὐ. παρεκκλίνειν” Arist.PA 666b7; “ἐπὶ τὰ εὐ. ἀνακλίνεσθαι” Id.HA498a11; “ἐξ -ωνύμων” Ev.Matt. 20.21; as military term, “τὸ εὐ. κέρας” Hdt.6.111, Th.5.67, etc.; τὸ εὐ. (without κέρας) Th.4.96.
2. euphem. of bad omens, opp.οἱ δεξιοὶ φύσιν, A.Pr.490, cf.SIG1167.3 (Ephesus, vi/v B. C.).
