φαρμάσσω , Att. φαρμα?́κ-ττω , prop.
A.treat by using φάρμακα: generally, treat, once in Hom., “ὡς ὅτ᾽ ἀνὴρ πέλεκυν . . εἰν ὕδατι ψυχρῷ βάπτῃ . . φαρμάσσων” Od.9.393; cf. foreg.11.
II. after Hom., heal or relieve by medicine, Pl.Lg.933b, A.R.4.1512.
b. φ. μέθυ medicate it, Nic.Th.619.
2. enchant or bewitch by potions or philtres, A.R.3.478, 4.61 (and in Med., Id.3.859): bewitch by flattery, Pl.Smp.194a, Men.80a:—Pass., “οἱ πεφαρμαγμένοι” Hp.Morb.Sacr.1; “πεφάρμαχθε” Ar.Th.534: metaph., of a lamp, “φαρμασσομένη χρίματος . . παρηγορίαις” A.Ag.94 (anap.).
3. poison, “κρέα” Plu.Art.19 (Pass.); “βέλη, τὸ ὕδωρ” Id.2.681f (Pass.), 978c: “ἀπεψίας, δι᾽ ἂς φαρμάσσεται τὸ γάλα” Sor.1.94.
4. dye, colour, “ἔρια” Poll.7.169: metaph., φαρμασσομένη “εὐμορφία” painted, false, Philostr.Ep.27.
5. season, “τηγανίτας σησάμοισι φ.” Hippon.36.
