φθονερ-ός , ά, όν,
A.envious, jealous, of persons, σοφίης μὴ φ. τελέθειν grudging of wisdom, Thgn.770, etc.; “ὄψον λόγοι φθονεροῖσιν” Pi. N.8.21; “φ. ταῖς ἑτέρων εὐτυχίαις” D.H.6.46: Sup., “ὀρνίθων -ώτατος” AP5.2 (Antip.Thess.). Adv., -ρῶς ἔχειν πρὸς τὰ παιδικά to be enviously disposed, Pl.Phdr.243c, cf. Isoc.15.302, X.Cyr.1.4.15, etc.
2. of the gods, jealous of those who abuse their gifts, or who enjoy unbroken felicity, “ὁ φ. δαίμων” Corinn.4; “τὸ θεῖον πᾶν ἐὸν φ.” Hdt.1.32; “ἐμοὶ αἱ σαὶ μεγάλαι εὐτυχίαι οὐκ ἀρέσκουσι, ἐπισταμένῳ τὸ θεῖον ὡς ἔστι φ.” Id.3.40, cf. 7.46; φθονεραῖς ἐκ θεῶν μετατροπίαις by jealous changes of purpose, Pi.P.10.20; cf. “φθόνος” 1.2.
II. of feelings, etc., φ. γνῶμαι, ἐλπίδες, Id.I.1.44, 2.43; “ἄλγος” A.Ag.450 (lyr.); “ὀδύνα” S.Ph.1141 (lyr.); “φ. ὁδοί” full of envy, Id.Fr.353 (lyr.); “φ. τέχνη” Anacreont.16.38.
