ἠίθεος [ι^], contr. ᾔθεος (v.infr.), Dor. ᾁθεος Cerc.9.11, but Aeol. (?) ἠΐθεος Sapph. (v. infr.): :—
A.unmarried youth (“ἠίθεον καὶ γεγαμηκότα ἄπαιδαPl.Lg.877e), Sapph.Supp.20a.18 (pl.); παρθένος . τε joined, Il.22.127, al.; “χοροὺς παρθένων τε καὶ ἠιθέωνHdt.3.48, cf. Plu. Thes.15; including παρθένοι, B.16 tit., cf. 43, al.; of the θεωροί sent to Delos, Arist.Ath.56.3; “οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ᾔθεοςE.Ph.945; of animals, unmated, Pl.Lg.840d: later as Adj., “παῖδες ἠίθεοιPlu.Thes.17; “ἠϊθέοισιν ἐφήβοισινIG3.1151.
2. ἠίθεοι, οἱ, ghosts of those who die unmarried, Tab.Defix.Aud.52.7.
II. rare as fem., ἠϊθέη,= παρθένος, Nic.Fr.74.64, AP9.241 (Antip.<Thess.>); “κόρη ᾔθεοςEup.332.
III. metaph. as Adj., “νοῦςPorph.Marc.33. (ἠιθ- shd. be read as ᾐθ- in Prose.)
