ἱμάς , , gen. ἱμάντος (not ἱμᾶς, ἱμᾶντος Hdn.Gr.2.939): Ep. dat. pl. ἱμάντεσσι:—
A.leathern strap or thong, Il.10.262, etc.; “ἱμάντα βοός3.375; “βοέους ἱμάντας22.397: mostly in pl., in various senses:
a. traces, 10.475,499,al.
c. straps on which the body of the chariot was hung, Il.5.727.
d. lash of a whip, formed by several thongs, 23.363.
e. boxing-glove, consisting of several straps put round the hand, ib.684, Pi.N.6.35, Pl.Prt.342c; “. πυκτικοίEup.22 D.
2. in sg., the magic girdle of Aphrodite, Il.14.214, 219.
b. chin-strap of the helmet, 3.371.
c. thong, by which the bolt was shot home into the socket, Od.1.442, cf. 4.802, 21.46.
d. after Hom., thong or latchet of a sandal, X.An.4.5.14, Ephipp.14.9, Men.109.2, Ev.Marc.1.7.
e. rail-rope, Aristag.5.
f. well-rope, Poll.10.31, Moer.
g. dog-leash, X.Cyn.7.6: prov., ἦσθ᾽ ἱμὰς κύνειος you were tough as a dog-leash, Ar.V.231; also “σὺν τῷ κυνὶ καὶ τὸν ἱμάνταPhot.
h. whip, scourge, “ἔξω τις δότω ἱμάνταAntiph.74.8, cf. Men.Sam.106; “ διὰ τῶν . αἰκείαPOxy.1186.2 (iv A.D.), cf. Act.Ap.22.25; “ἱμάντες παιδαγωγῶνLib.Ep.911.2.
