καλλι^ερ-έω , pf.
A.“κεκαλλιέρηκα” Ph.1.319: plpf. “ἐκεκαλλιερήκειν” X. Cyr.6.4.12: (ἱερόν):—have favourable signs in a sacrifice, obtain good omens, of the person, “κἂν καλλιερῆτε” Pl.Com.51, cf. X. l. c., IG12.45.5, etc.:—also in Med., Hdt.6.82, Isoc.14.60, X.An.5.4.22, etc.; ἐς τὸν (sc. ποταμὸν） . . ἐκαλλιερέοντο σφάζοντες ἵππους (where ἐς τόν is constructed with σφάζοντες) Hdt.7.113.
2. c. acc., sacrifice with good omens, “ταῖς Νύμφαις τὰν ἀμνόν” Theoc.5.148; καλλιερεῖν βοῦν prob. l. in Orac. ap. D.21.53; “ἑαυτὸν τῷ πατρίῳ νόμῳ” Plu.Alex.69: abs., “κ. τοῖς θεοῖς” X.Eq.Mag.3.1, cf. Pl.Lg.791a:—Med., Ar.Pl.1181:— Pass., “ἐὰν καὶ καλλιερηθῇ τοῖς θεοῖς” Men.319.8; “τοὺς ξένους τῇ Ἀρτέμιδι καλλιερεῖσθαι” S.E.P.1.149.
II. of the offering, give favourable omens, καλλιερησάντων [τῶν ἱρῶν] Hdt.9.19; καλλιερῆσαι θυομένοισι οὐκ ἐδύνατο (sc. τὰ ἱρά) Id.7.134: c. inf., “οὐκ ἐκαλλιέρεε ὥστε μάχεσθαι Πέρσῃσι” Id.9.38; “οὐκ ἐκαλλιέρεε οὐδαμῶς διαβαίνειν μιν” Id.6.76:—Med., “ὡς οὐδὲ ταῦτα ἐκαλλιερεῖτο” X.HG3.1.17.
